I am new not just this tribe but all of Tribe.net. I am a professional photographer. I have run a large retail camera store and been lead photographer for over 15 years. I taught photography for many, many years and just recently quit my job to start my own photography business. The one thing about having left the retail camera world is I miss all the contact with other photographers and discussing what they are shooting and what types of equipment they like to use for what purpose. So anytime you want to chat about any of the above, please message me. I look forward to getting to know you.

Also since I am new to Tribes if you have a good tribe that you think I should investigate I would appreciate a steer in that direction. There seem to be so many tribes I tend to get overwhelmed just looking at the lists and forget what I was looking for in the first place. I am a major fan of Art, artistic people, photography of all types, belly dancing, writing, rugby, reading fantasy and fiction, hosting parties etc. If you have found a tribe that you really enjoy would you drop me a line so I can check it out so that I can get more connected. Thanks to all
Another Newbie, with a question/recommendation request

Hello ladies!

I'm fairly new to the whole tribe thing; I was lured here by ren faire geeks. *wink*

Anyway, I'm a hobbyist photographer who outgrew her Olympus P&S camera a few years ago. My parents gave me a Canon 20D two years ago, and a new lens last year (all of which are at the camera store being cleaned... so, I can't tell you which lens). I'm still just using the automatic settings as I haven't made it to a class just yet.

I take photos of flowers and my back yard, sunsets, family and friends, buildings with interesting architecture, as well as documenting, quite prolifically, any travels. My wife says I have a magic camera - one that makes things look better through the camera than they do in real life. I've been fortunate to have had a camera since I was 8 years old - so, my love of taking and enjoying photos spans more than 25 years.

My wife and I are taking our honeymoon in Paris and Venice next month, so I am looking forward to many, many wonderful photo opportunities. To that end, I have a request for you all. We are looking for a day-pack type bag to use during our travels. I would like to use something in which I can put my camera and lenses, and have them be safe and protected, but also stash a couple bottles of water, snacks, and a few purchases. Because of pickpocketing fears, I'm leaning towards a sling-back design that I can easily wear on my front or back, and allows easy access to my camera.

Do and of you have a camera/day-pack recommendation that fits these criteria?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hey everyone! My name is Aly and I am a photographer living in Seattle. The name of my business is La Luz Photography. I do mainly weddings and children's portraiture. My formal training is in black and white fine art photography, but I have taken my business digital for conservation reasons.
I'm currently looking to join some photography associations and possibly a business group here in Seattle. I haven't done enough networking, so I'd like to start that now!

Nice to meet you all!

Hi all. I've been thinking about how wonderful it would be to travel to 3rd world countries/countries in strife and document the conditions there for charitable/public education purposes. However it seems like this sort of job would be particularly dangerous for women, even moreso than men.

So, I'm looking for inspirational stories of women who have done this kind of photojournalism. Do you have any to share?

portable photo storage

So I'm trying to figure out a way to store my photos while I'm away traveling. It's more practical for me to buy an extra drive rather than a bunch of SD cards, due to expense. (both of my cameras use SD)

Something I need to consider is that I'll be gone for two years, and probably won't have much access to electricity during that time. I have a solar panel which can charge my camera batteries by way of 12v DC adapters. In any case....

I'm considering the Jobo Giga One 80gb hard drive:
Here's a link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=JOG180GB&is=REG&Q=&O=productlist&sku=413946

Does anyone have experience with this particular drive? How well does it work for you? How is the battery life?

Any other suggestions or recommendations are welcome.

Hello Ladies,

I'm glad to be a new member! I've just started my own photography business this past year, selling art prints online ( www.dsbrennan.com ) and occasionally in person, and I'm constantly learning new things. I tend to gravitate towards semi-abstract images, though I've recently become the "official" photographer for a local carousel that's starting a carousel art wall of sorts. I'm looking forward to learning from you all and being exposed to some different points of view!

hey-
how is everyone?
i have a question-
a friend of mine is having a small wedding next year and has asked me (she is only asking a couple of family members ) to take some pictures-
basically she wants me te be a guest more than a photographer- but she would like to pay me to take pictures for a couple hours- i believe the ceremony and the beginning of the reception- i will be giving her the images on disk- and i plan on setting some up black and white as well as sepia (the location is outdoors and lends well for these) but not too much extra work on photoshop- she wont let me- (we are pretty close friends)...
my question- what would you charge?

i'm new to the tribe and just wanted to introduce myself. i'm not sure what else to say, but hi! let's see.... i've been photographing since i was a wee one and went to nyu for photography and then took a break from art for the last few years (but it's a passion that simply cannot die!) and i'm getting back into it and working on a new piece called, you get to be you. i'll post a call for models for the piece to our tribe and if any of you are in los angeles and interested, let me know. i'd also be interested in setting up a group of l.a. photographers that want to get together for group crits.

I've been trying to find a bag that I can use to hold a couple of medium size zooms, a bit odd items (battery, mini flashlight) as well as have another compartment that can be used as a purse, and have the whole thing look handbag enough for everyday use around town. Does anyone have any recommendations or asuggestions on where to look for such a thing?

Thanks,

Hello + Tech ?'s about Film Photography on the Playa

Hey all... I joined you because I have some questions about taking pics on the Playa that I'd bet you all could answer. I'm not a pro photographer, but I really got into traditional photography when I was in college and continue to do be a film photography enthusiast... I'm a little afraid my questions will sound a little silly to seasoned pros - but I figure no question is a stupid question and I want my pics to be the best they can be :-)

This is a cross-post from the BurningMan Virgins tribe. I look forward to your replies and sharing my pics when we get back!

Love,
Sarah

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have some geeky photo questions that I think some of you guys might be able to help me out with:

I plan on bringing my Holga with me - I figure it's the only camera that I'm going to be OK with getting ruined, since it only costs $20 to begin with! I'm just having some issues deciding on what to have in my film arsenal... I didn't go to the event last year, but I flew out to Reno to accompany a friend on the drive back to New York. I got some GREAT pics driving through Wyoming 'n stuff and I learned a bunch about shooting wide open + super bright spaces. I don't have a light meter, nor would I bring it if I had one (another thing too expensive to let it get ruined) and I'm also trying to avoid bringing a flash, since it's just another piece of something I'd have to lug. So film speed is key since I'll have no other control of the exposure...

My questions are as follows:

-I know it's really really bright during the day, so I plan on bringing 5 rolls of Fuji 160C and 2 Rolls of Ilford FP4. Will this be enough to be 1 stop overexposed (for good color saturation) at f8/ISO-100? I shot w/ 400 speed last time and some of the negs were way too dense.
-I haven't seen a lot of black and white photos from the Playa and I plan on taking at least 3 rolls in Black and White. What has been your experience with that? Has anyone come back with B&W shots they were happy with?
-For the burn on Saturday night, since I don't have a flash, I plan on shooting 1 roll of Ilford Delta-3200. Do you think these will come out?
-For twighlight + early morning pics, I plan on taking them with Fuji 800Z (color). Took some pics with this out in Wendover Utah at dusk that didn't come out and I ended up being REALLY dissappointed, since they could have been the most enchanting shots of the trip. Do you think if I push them 2 stops, they will come out?

Thanks!

If you get bored come visit me and leave a few comments at my doorstep. You can find me at http://eightdaystillsunday.my-expressions.com/ or just googe "eight days till sunday."

New digital arts festival > twonotten
http://www.twonotten.org
Southampton, UK. October 20th - December 15th 2006.

This October will see the launch of a new eight-week long digital arts
festival, twonotten, and this is your opportunity to be part of it.
Submissions are now being called for from digital artists who wish to
showcase their work. The final venues for the festival are to be
confirmed, although we can announce that the bargate monument gallery
and a number of artvaults in Southampton will be part of the event.

Exhibition submission criteria
Artists or groups wishing to submit work for the exhibition must provide
the following information:
- Written proposal (maximum of 500 words). Tell us about the piece(s)
of work you
are submitting.
- Visual representations (images on CD are preferred, however this is
not
essential).
- The dimensions of your piece(s).
- Any technical requirements / specifications the piece(s) may require
(including equipment needed or equipment being supplied by you). Some
equipment is available, but the organisers welcome the use of artist's
own
equipment for the exhibition.
- £10.00 entry fee per artwork in order to cover administrative and
insurance
costs. Please make all cheques payable to the organiser's 'a space'.
The arts
organisation a space has been actively supporting and exhibiting
emerging
artistic talent for the last five years. In association with their
partners
(cockneydog and ocean pixel), this new platform, twonotten, will
support digital
based practitioners. For more information regarding a space please
visit
http://www.bargategallery.org or http://www.artvaults.co.uk

NB
- There is no strict format to follow when entering, please submit a
addressed
envelope.
- No funding is available to commission new works.
- All media submitted will be considered for artwork that either deals
with digital
or technology issues, or artwork in which digital technology was
critical to its
production.
Selection
select the works to be exhibited. The decision of the panel is final
and will be based on
work maybe
selected for any one of a number of venues situated in Southampton
- You will be required to aid the promotion of the event through
assisting in
raising awareness through your own database or artistic networks.
and continue until Friday 15th December 2006, with a private viewing
of the
exhibition scheduled for the week prior to the exhibition opening
(this date
will be confirmed in due course).
- Proposals can also be submitted by email but will require a cheque to
be received
in the post by the cut-off date before the work can be considered.

Hi I am a new member here. My name is Sarah Harmon. I have my own photography business here in Portland, Or. It can be viewed at www.HoodPhotography.com.

I am very involved in wedding photography and portraiture as a source of income. But my photographic passions are nature and landscape photography, as well as children.

I am always on the lookout for leads, both fun and professional. I am also looking to make friends with the same interests as me!

Thanks for reading my intro, and until later....keep shooting! :)

Seeing the big picture

Cheap and simple digital cameras are turning the world of photography on its head. Will this revolution be the profession's biggest challenge, asks Tom Ang

Thursday November 24, 2005
The Guardian

The photographic coverage of the July 7 London bombings was an unexpected aftershock for media professionals. The realisation that almost every image seen on television news and front pages was captured by amateurs sent shivers down the collective media spine. It was confirmation, if any were needed, that digital photography had come of age. Thanks to sales exceeding 200m a year worldwide, including cameraphones, access to digital photography is all but universal among the urban population.
What is astonishing is to realise that the important changes - from nearly zero adoption to near-saturation of the market - took place in only five years. While the first patents for a filmless camera were filed in 1972, we had to wait until 1986 for the first digital camera system, the Canon RC-701. It was aimed at press photographers but its $27,000 price tag was hardly an encouragement. The first consumer digital camera under $1,000 arrived in 1994: the Apple QuickTake had a fixed lens and took 640x480 pixels (similar to the quality of an average TV screen). It was apparent that, while it was fun to get a picture without the hassle of processing film, the price was too high for image quality that was, to put it kindly, dilapidated.

It was not digital cameras that blocked progress. As with any new technology, the environment had to be conducive. Digital photography needed computers with fast processors capable of dealing with large files - one image file can be bigger than a year's worth of text documents. In the late 1990s, computers were being loaded with ever more memory, hard-disk capacity and extra software to encourage flagging sales.

Right time, right place

Digital photography took off only when, at the turn of the millennium, every computer could comfortably handle image files. As the market grew, manufacturing costs dropped. The adoption of cost-saving measures such as sharing components (the imaging chip, image processors, LCD screens and minor optics) between camera models also helped to drive down prices.

The impact of digital photography on modern life is in part due to marketing. Aggressive competition between camera makers has forced product cycles - the time between new models - to shorten. Replacement models are being announced almost before the previous camera has reached the market.

The arrival of each new model offering more features and more quality at lower prices means that consumers are the winners. And don't they know it: half of all digital camera sales (not including cameraphones) in the US and Europe are to those who already own a digital camera.

The intense activity has fuelled a parallel growth in technological awareness: it is no longer remarkable when a grandmother asks her teenage grandson to explain the difference between optical and digital zoom. Retired schoolteachers shop for cameras with a checklist of specifications in a way they would never have done for film-based models.

The increased awareness of the technology together with wide access to digital photography has, in turn, thrown the industry into disarray. The headlines - such as Dixons removing film cameras from its shelves, Kodak no longer making black-and-white printing paper and the near-extinction of household names such as Leica, Agfa and Polaroid - all signal the obvious changes.

The restructuring of the profession is more subtle, profound and distressing: experienced photographers are finding themselves marginalised, their darkroom skills discounted with a rapidity that makes the destruction of craft traditions by the industrial revolution appear snail-paced in comparison.

To join the digital world, these professionals not only have to abandon large investments in equipment and experience, they must retrain to use computers and imaging software. And as film-using professionals are supplanted by digital photographers, so their largely obsolete equipment can be bought for a song.

Working practices have changed. The industry has now dumped ultimate responsibility for image quality on the lap of photographers - amateur and professional alike. All the quality control processes formerly ensuring that you got good results when films were developed and printed now sit in your hands.

Not only is it your job to download your pictures, you must adjust or manipulate the image if you don't like the results, before printing it out on your printer. And if the results are not perfect, there is no one to blame but yourself.

After enjoying a brief respite from having to placate increasingly demanding customers, the industry woke to the horrified realisation that no one makes prints any more. From the happy days of a print made for every image captured, it's now one miserable print for every few hundred images.

This is particularly galling because we now take far more images than ever: stories of those who once exposed a roll of film per holiday but now return to find hundreds of images in their new digital camera are not rare. But we show the images on our computers using slideshow features of software such as iPhoto or PowerPoint; we attach image files to the emails we send home; we share our holiday snaps on picture-sharing websites.

For the professional, the honeymoon of sensual joy in reviewing pictures immediately and of not having to dash to the lab to get films processed has been replaced by a colder reality. The working day suddenly grew hours longer: with nightfall, we can't put our feet up. No, we sit at the laptop downloading images, captioning and backing up. And, if we are press photographers, we then have to edit the day's shoot before transmitting them.

Any attempt to gaze into the crystal ball will be obscured by the sheer number of images being taken. In 1998, 67bn images were made worldwide. We know that because 3bn rolls of film were sold. It is impossible to be accurate, but with a world population of digital cameras exceeding a third of a billion on top of millions of film-using cameras still in use, it is likely that more pictures are taken every year than in the previous 160 years of photography put together. In addition to the other pollutions we have unleashed on ourselves, we may well have to thank digital photography for giving us image pollution.

Hi.

I joined a week or two ago but I haven't had time to post an intro....That is one of the major themes of my life: I am a single mom, three kids, one dog, two jobs but in my SPARE time I live for taking photographs and writing.

One of these days I'm going to give myself enough time to actually make a little money from these ventures which give me so much pleasure so that I can cut back on my day jobs!

I'll be popping in and out and hope to get to know you and your photographs.

Regards,
Karina

I don't think this topic has been discussed yet which sort of surprises me.

How do you deal with and determine when some one is truly interested in you as a photographer and the skills you have to offer, and when they really just want to sleep with you? And how to deal when it's a combination of the two?

(I had enough problems with this in the States and now I'm living in a Latin country as a blondish, white woman - whew!)

Hi Everyone,
I've been interested in photography most of my life, have gotten serious about it in the past 5 years and have now quit my boring office job in order to try to do it full-time.

I'm approaching photography a little backwards. I'm living in Mexico and trying to start out in the business here on my own without assisting. I feel I have enough experience to do this down here because quite frankly expectations are a little lower. My next step will be to go back to NYC where I'll be a little fish in a big pond and try assisting there until I can get work on my own. I'm focusing on breaking into wedding photography (because I've moved to a destination wedding location) but so far have also gotten work photographing some musicians for their website and got a tearsheet of a restaurant interior.

Any words of wisdom from my more experienced "sisters"?

Hi there~
I'm See! I've have been studying photography over the past 5 years (nights & weekend) while working full-time in the medical industry. During the last 3 years I've (also) been shooting professionally in mostly the commercial and entertainment realms of the industry. Though, I must admit, my heart is in travel & landscapes. Anyway, I hope to some day make the career cross-over so that I'm shooting full time.

I enjoy most formats of photography including 35mm (Nikon F100), medium (Mamiya RZ67) and large format (I cherish my OLD Graflex Super Graphic). And I’ve only recently stared to dabble in the digital side of the craft after being gifted with a Nikon D70 for my b-day last January. I must say that I'm a big fan of the digital world. It’s allowed me to experiment more since I can view the results immediately! I also really enjoy working in the more creative fields of photography including Polaroid transfers & emulsion lifts, Holga, Pinhole & Zone Plate cameras...all way too much fun!

Last Spring semester was a big one for me as I completed a Web Design course for Photographers. I encourage you to take a look at my new site when you have a moment. And please feel free to share any comments and/or suggestions:

Thanks a bunch & soooo very glad to be here~

has any of you beautiful creatures printed up such a frenzy in your darkroom that after a 7 hr day it all starts to look the SAME???!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaa!

i am letting my eyes rest, the screen probably is not a good idea tho...more glare into those eyeballs, but at least it's brighter then the cave with the red light...

anyone else have this problem? and how might one just pry theyself away in a moment of mania and negs that have been laying round for months screeming to be printed?!

oops sorry...i'm horrible at intros...ok, back to the darkroom i go as i catch the last and first glimpse of winter light....

Hello Lovelies,
I've been lurking (and drooling over the work here!) for a little while, just thought I would introduce myself. I have an interest in erotic photography, and product photography...and just photography. Just have a P&S right now, but with some luck, plan to get a 20D in the next few weeks.
You can see my work here:

Hi,

I'm pretty new to the city and looking for an affordable, good quality photo lab to process and make 4x6's of some old rolls of Ilford film, hopefully someplace that won't rape me or eat up my film like Walgreens would... Too bad I'm not enrolled in a photo class in college right now, otherwise I'd do it myself, but...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Introduction - Working both sides of the camera in Santa Cruz

Hello there, folks... Just a quick intro from me, since it was requested by the moderator.

I'm 24 and female (well, obviously) with very little formal training outside of workshops and tutorials.

I've been mostly in front of the camera lately... but when I am behind the lens, I generally have a minimal-equipment photojournalist style. I tend to work primarily with oddballs, crossdressers, and goth/alternative/fetish imagery. I suspect this is primarily a consequence of the people I invite out for photo excursions, but most of my focus is on creating arousing or amusing photographs of non-standard body shapes, genders or unusual situations that involve kinks (both subtle and overt). I take the kind of photograph I'd like to see more of - creative fetish images in which the subjects are obviously having a great time. :-) Right now, I do very little with graphic sexuality, aiming more for "implied" images.

I'm quite keen on branching out to other styles/subject matter, but am doing so quite gradually.

I'm an experienced bondage rigger and mostly work on a tfp basis with local friends and via word of mouth. I shoot almost exclusively "on location" with older-model digital cameras in and around the bay area.

I strive to capture interesting, beautiful and telling images of my subjects... and find that a day of "messing around" out and about, costumed or otherwise, nets me plenty of opportunities for great photos if my fingers are fast enough to reach for the buttons.

Of course, my eyes see "great" images a little more readily then others might. I also consider a day a resounding success if we net a tiny handful of semi-usable images... which is why I try to set up shoots in addition to a fun excursion. That way, even if the photos are all failures, we have good memories to show from the day.

I'm gradually working on reducing my sound-to-noise ratio of usable and flattering photographs. Working with digital has been an interesting learning curve, but one I appreciate due to its lower costs. In the meanwhile, I don't present myself as anything other then an enthusiastic and creative amateur.

Cheerfully,
- D
All of the above.

question about wedding photography

I just want to say hi, since I new. But I do have a question about wedding photography. I'm mostly an art photographer, did a few portraits for friends and family. But I was recently asked to do a wedding, by a friend of a friend. I'm not sure how to do pricing. At least for proofs. I did read a previous post about buying software, but honesly this is not something I wanna do regularly.
If anyone can give me some advice... I would really appreciate it.

Hello!
My name is Gazelle and I am a new member to this tribe.
I've been doing photography as a hobby for quite some time. Now people are asking me to do commercial stuff for them, like photographing their place of business for their website, etc. I don't know how much to charge. I was wondering if others would give me an idea of what they charge. I don't want to overcharge or undervalue myself.
thanks!

hello,

I just joined this tribe so i wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

I'm in baltimore MD and just getting started as a photographer.

I am curious if people think it is very helpful to join photography organizations such as ASMP, PPA, and the like?

How do you find the majority of your clients? Word of mouth, advertising in specific areas, etc ?

Thanks!

Any thoughts on bringing any kind of camera (digital/film) on to the playa...
I've been told to leave it at home. I own the Canon 10D and the Canon S20
point and shoot... The Canon 10D is my "work camera" and only one I have.
Would the Canon S20 fair a better chance as the lens retracts and it's portable?
Will have to buy a few lithium batteries.. as rechargeables won't be feasible there.

Will shoot film..but have gotten spoiled with digital in the years...
I own a Canon A2 for film

I've been told baggies..but want to make sure the best way to bring a camera on the
playa..
Lots of batteries.. :)

appreciate any feedback.. thanks... "A"

any thoughts... thanks "A"

Hi ladies...
I'm new here...

I just recently moved to San Francisco and for some reason I've been experiencing a wee bit of writer's block but on the photo end...

I have a super duper awesome couple of cameras, and a gorgeous city to live in but have been neglecting my camera as of late...

Other than some lame snapshots of my new house to send to my family in New Mexico, not much has been catching my eye... I have a lazy eye and need to snap out of it!

Any bay area ladies here have a place or few to recommend me taking some "welcome to the city" photos?

Thanks, and check my site out too !

Hi everyone, I'm a total amateur digital photographer. Only became interested starting last year when I bought my first digital camera. Now whenever the camera is my hands, it's a difficult to stop shooting. I love going to art museums with my camera and looking at pieces through the lens - helps me "see" so much better.

Hi there,

Thanks Sue for creating this tribe. I generally take pictures just for fun, at concerts or when I am out in nature. I love taking pictures of trees that seem to have human forms (many of them do!). I have been taking pictures for many years but have focused more on it in the past year. My boyfriend takes some great shots at concerts and he has helped me with tips on how to take good photos (i.e. not facing the sun!). Looking forward to getting more tips from the women in this group as well.

just wondering if anyone has had success in doing inkjet transfers with their digital images? what techniques might you be using? i have experience with transferring color laser prints but alas the same technique does not work with the water based inks. i'd like to transfer some on to handmade paper and fabric.

photography on the playa

hey gals...

any experience out on the playa? i've read some stuff saying this, that and the other...i want to bring it all, but know that damage may occur (cringe), batteries run out (no where to recharge), film versus digital, etc.

what are your most enlightening experiences? tips to share?

cheers!

display/sell their photos in a coffee shop or some such place? I am thinking about trying to sell some prints that way and wanted any input y'all had on it! I've seen art for sale on walls lableled with a 'bid' sheet instead of a price card... i thought that was a great idea at the time... but wanted to see what others thought as well!
Thanks!
