hey-
how is everyone?
i have a question-
a friend of mine is having a small wedding next year and has asked me (she is only asking a couple of family members ) to take some pictures-
basically she wants me te be a guest more than a photographer- but she would like to pay me to take pictures for a couple hours- i believe the ceremony and the beginning of the reception- i will be giving her the images on disk- and i plan on setting some up black and white as well as sepia (the location is outdoors and lends well for these) but not too much extra work on photoshop- she wont let me- (we are pretty close friends)...
my question- what would you charge?

I would do it for free :))

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 1:17 PMI went through this same thing recently. I shot film, I don't like the shutter delay on digital for something as faced paced as a wedding where every second counts. I didn't charge them for my time, just for the film and I let them handle the processing. -

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 1:21 PMsee- that's my concern with my digital camera- the delay-
the wedding is nearly a year from now , i might have a more professional one by then... but i wonder will it still have that awful delay?
(she wont let me do it for free... so she says) -

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 1:28 PMFrom what I understand, even the super nice SLR digitals have the delay. Someone told me if you shoot on a low res the delay is minimized, but then what's the point?
If you really don't want your friend's money, charge her $1. -

:))))
(1 dollar)
What delay are you talking about? I don't get! :(( -

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 1:48 PMWhen you press the button on a digital, it takes about 1-2 seconds to record the image. If you're using a flash, it may take even longer. With a film camara, it's as fast as you want it to be.

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 2:53 PMyeah- you can set them (digi's) to take a few per second - i havn't tried that-
push the botton once and it records multiple images...
it also will do multiple images per frame...
but i have not tried this when concerned with delay-
that delay pisses me off when i am shooting fire- you really have to push the button before you want to... -

Re: ideas for a friend
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 3:38 PMI have a Canon 10D digital SLR, no delay on the shutter. There is slight lag in writing to the CF card if you shoot continuously.
I would charge her around $200-300 for the wedding, because when you are shooting you are working and are not a guest. I would try to get a digital SLR for the event though and not use a point and shoot. You can always rent one for the day. -

Re: ideas for a friend
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 12:03 AMI'm shooting a wedding for a friend this weekend- free. Our deal is since its out of town she pays for my room and I get to eat all I want at the reception and in return she gets all the shots on a disc and does the printing herself. A year should give you enough time to save up for something faster camera wise and an additional lense. Make sure you take a back up body just in case. trust me on that one. I learned my lesson the hard way. -

Mon, August 15, 2005 - 10:19 AMTrue that... back-up body and plenty of batteries. You can't be to careful shooting a wedding. -

Re: ideas for a friend
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 2:24 PMDefinitely rent backup gear--at the least, a 10D (Canon) or D70 (Nikon) and complementary flashes. Check out the wedding forum at www.fredmiranda.com for tips. There are a lot of emerging wedding photographers asking similar questions there.
If you're going to shoot for a friend, make sure she understands that you're not a wedding photographer, and therefore, the arrangement of food/accomodations is commeasurate with your experience. (I expect a plate for myself and my assistant at each wedding, and all travel is paid for by my clients in addition to package fees).
Most of all, relax! The toughest part of shooting your first wedding for any type of compensation is the stress. Visit the locations beforehand and practice. Take a variety of lenses--in your case, just go with a couple wide and mid-range zooms, maybe a few normal primes--and be sure to find out from the bride if you're allowed to use flash during the ceremony.
Good luck! You've got plenty of time to practice. -

Re: ideas for a friend
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 10:19 AMDon't have any wedding photo advice per se but I use a Nikon D70 and there's no noticable shutter delay at all. I've only experienced that with the digital point and shoots. -

Re: ideas for a friend
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 7:58 PMJust to echo this. Point and shoot digitals have delays. SLRs do not. Most professional wedding photography these days is digital.
