Hello ladies!
I'm fairly new to the whole tribe thing; I was lured here by ren faire geeks. *wink*
Anyway, I'm a hobbyist photographer who outgrew her Olympus P&S camera a few years ago. My parents gave me a Canon 20D two years ago, and a new lens last year (all of which are at the camera store being cleaned... so, I can't tell you which lens). I'm still just using the automatic settings as I haven't made it to a class just yet.
I take photos of flowers and my back yard, sunsets, family and friends, buildings with interesting architecture, as well as documenting, quite prolifically, any travels. My wife says I have a magic camera - one that makes things look better through the camera than they do in real life. I've been fortunate to have had a camera since I was 8 years old - so, my love of taking and enjoying photos spans more than 25 years.
My wife and I are taking our honeymoon in Paris and Venice next month, so I am looking forward to many, many wonderful photo opportunities. To that end, I have a request for you all. We are looking for a day-pack type bag to use during our travels. I would like to use something in which I can put my camera and lenses, and have them be safe and protected, but also stash a couple bottles of water, snacks, and a few purchases. Because of pickpocketing fears, I'm leaning towards a sling-back design that I can easily wear on my front or back, and allows easy access to my camera.
Do and of you have a camera/day-pack recommendation that fits these criteria?
Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Another Newbie, with a question/recommendation request
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 6:15 PMcheck out crumpler. they have both sling bags and traditional backpacks that are perfect for this sort of thing - not easy for someone else to get into, fits all your lenses +, etc. they have a camerabag section on their sight, but you might also want to look at their messenger bags which you can add an accessory to (they call it a bucket) that will fit camera and lenses with protection. however, speaking from experience... i use both a messenger and a bookbag and while the messenger/sling is nice b/c i can get to everything, it can get really heavy in a way that a traditonal backpack doesn't. the one thing about crumpler bags is that they are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for.
if you don't think this is right for you, check out the popular photography website. they do reviews on photo products and will give you breakdowns on different ones...
good luck!

Re: Another Newbie, with a question/recommendation request
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 12:27 PMI taught photography and ran a camera store for many years. My preference is for the tamrac Expedition 3. It is moderately sized but still holds my SLR, two lens and flash or camera one lens, flash and video camera in the body of the bag. Then it has zipper sealed compartments for cards, filters, batteries etc. On the outside is a netting pouch criss crossed with elastic bungie type cord that is great for water bottles. That way it keeps the liquids completely away from the valuable stuff.
