hi girls,
i'm new to the tribe and just wanted to introduce myself. i'm not sure what else to say, but hi! let's see.... i've been photographing since i was a wee one and went to nyu for photography and then took a break from art for the last few years (but it's a passion that simply cannot die!) and i'm getting back into it and working on a new piece called, you get to be you. i'll post a call for models for the piece to our tribe and if any of you are in los angeles and interested, let me know. i'd also be interested in setting up a group of l.a. photographers that want to get together for group crits.
best,
jordan

Re: meet me!
Thu, November 2, 2006 - 8:21 PMWelcome Jordan!
How was NYU's photo program? I graduated from NYU many moons ago. My sophomore year I took a Photo 101 course that I loved but felt photography was impractical so I majored in anthropology instead (go figure). But I always wondered what it would have been like to study photography there. (Many years later I studied at SVA and ICP and thought they had great instructors and classes.) -

Re: meet me!
Thu, November 9, 2006 - 12:49 PMnyu is awesome. i love the teachers and the dept is really small... like 150 students total, so it's intimate and friendly. there is something for everybody pretty much except maybe fashion. i went there because it was the best university photo program, so that i could do other things besides take art school classes, so i was pretty happy with it.
the only thing that ever disappointed me there is that i didn't feel like the students were really dedicated the way they are in a regular art school like parsons or sva. a lot of people "just got by" and i really wanted to have an environment with more passionate people. was the anthro dept like that too? a lot of nyu seems like that... but maybe it's just college and humans in general. who knows. -

Re: meet me!
Thu, November 9, 2006 - 10:49 PMI felt a little lost in the anthro dept at NYU. It never felt like a department to me and I don't know if that was me and my youth or what. I never felt community there and didn't really know my fellow classmates. I lived in the dorms and that's where I met and became friends with most people. But I thought the education was great. Maybe because I took some graduate classes and they were tougher but more interesting too.
I had some good classmates at SVA, Parsons and ICP (it was all continuing ed classes I took but I think some of the same instructors teach both) but I found a photodocumentary/journalism class at ICP was one of the best because students were really serious and passionate about becoming amazing photographers. But I had equally good instructors at SVA.
It's so important to be around other photographers and NYC is great for the galleries and museums too. It all keeps you stimulated. I wish I had that now. I live in a town with 30+ galleries but I've only seen 2 with any sort of photography. And working as freelancer, I don't meet a lot of other photogs either. But I'll keep looking!
